2020-2021 Game Summaries
The North Allegheny water polo team continued its strong play on the season with a doubleheader sweep of the McDowell Trojans on Tuesday night. The NA Boys began the evening with an 11-8 win and the Lady Tigers earned an 8-5 triumph in the nightcap.
In the opener, the NA Boys held a 5-4 lead at the half and gained control of the contest with a big third quarter. The Tigers outscored the Trojans 4-1 in the period, increasing the advantage to 9-5. The lead grew to 10-5 when sophomore Ben Gavran scored his sixth of the season with 2:51 remaining the fourth quarter, but a late McDowell charge trimmed the NA advantage to 10-8 with 21 seconds to play. Despite the late flurry by the Trojans, North Allegheny put the game on ice on a goal by senior captain David Lomakin with two seconds on the clock to cap an 11-8 victory. Lomakin finished with three goals on the night, increasing his team-leading total to 40 on the season, and was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
Adding to the NA goal total were junior Ethan Berty, sophomore Keller Sens and senior Tyler Tieppo with two goals apiece. Sophomore Asher Jones also chipped in with a goal, his eighth of the year. Sophomore Sean McClellan set goal with a team-leading three assists and Sens paced the defense with a team-leading three steals. In net, the tandem of Eliot Maravich and Justin Morrison combined for nine saves in the win. McDowell was paced by junior Owen Hardner, who tallied five goals in a losing effort.
Following an overtime loss in sudden death to McDowell on Saturday, the Lady Tigers were eager for a chance at redemption and took a 2-1 lead into halftime thanks to goals from juniors Anna Kegel and Emily Donnelly. At the 3:47 mark of the third quarter, freshman Grace Tirak tied the game at 2-2 with her second of four goals on the night for the Trojans.
However, after a low-scoring first half, North Allegheny opened the floodgates by scoring the next five goals to grab a 7-2 lead by the 6:46 mark of the fourth quarter. The NA run was powered by Donnelly with two more goals for a hat trick, and sophomore Rebecca Melanson with all three of her goals coming during the 5-0 spurt. For her efforts, Melanson was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.
McDowell fought back with three goals in a 90 second span in the fourth quarter, but it was too little, too late as the Tigers hung on for an 8-5 win. Senior captain Emma Halle netted a goal for NA in the final stanza to increase her team-leading total to 34 on the season. Halle, Melanson and Marissa Dorman all hauled in three steals each to pace the defense. Kegel also set up numerous goals with a team-leading four assists on the night. In net, junior Hannah Ziegler earned the win with 12 saves and continued strong play in between the pipes.
With sweep, the North Allegheny boys’ team improves to 7-1 on the season and the Lady Tigers jump to 5-4 on the campaign. NA will visit Wilson for a final tune-up before the Western Conference Round Robin begins next week.
The North Allegheny water polo team made a return trip to Erie this weekend for a tournament against Cathedral Prep, McDowell and Villa Maria. The NA Boys went 2-0 at the tournament, while the Lady Tigers took two narrow losses on the day.
The NA Boys opened up the action with an exciting 9-8 win against Cathedral Prep. With the game tied, 7-7 going into the fourth quarter, North Allegheny scored two goals in the final frame to claim the win. Senior captain Tyler Tieppo paced the offense with a hat trick and sophomore Keller Sens added a pair of goals. Also scoring in the victory were Ethan Berty, David Lomakin, Sean McClellan and Asher Jones. In net, goalies Eliot Maravich and Justin Morrison combined for six saves.
In game two against McDowell, North Allegheny built a 9-4 lead by halftime and fended off a second-half rally by the Trojans for a 13-11 triumph. McClellan had a terrific all-around game, netting five goals on offense and posting a team-high four steals defensively. Lomakin scored five goals as well, matching McClellan for the team lead in that category. Sophomore Ben Gavran chipped in with a pair of goals and Berty earned one tally as well. The tandem of Maravich and Morrison secured five saves to ensure the victory.
For the Lady Tigers, the tournament began with a 14-9 loss to Villa Maria. VM won on the strength of a strong second quarter, outscoring NA 6-1 in the period. Despite the loss, the Tigers were led by senior captain Emma Halle on offense with three goals and an assist. Junior Emma Donnelly and sophomore Rebecca Melanson each scored a pair of goals, while junior Anna Kegel and freshman Elizabeth Vales tallied one marker apiece. Kegel also paced the defense with a team-high five steals. In net, freshman goalie Izzie Trunzo collected five saves.
In the night cap against McDowell, the NA girls’ team rallied from a 4-0 halftime deficit with a valiant effort in the second half to force overtime. However, in a sudden death third overtime, the Trojans prevailed for a 10-9 win. It was the Lady Tigers’ third overtime contest of the season. Aiding the comeback efforts in the second half were Melanson and Halle who scored three and two goals, respectively. Also netting goals were Kegel, Donnelly, Marissa Dorman and Carissa Jones. Junior goalie Hannah Ziegler made an astonishing 18 saves, with nine of them coming in the fourth quarter and overtime.
On the year, the North Allegheny boys’ team improves to 6-1 on the season and the Lady Tigers sit at 4-4. The Tigers will host McDowell on Tuesday night.
In the first meet of the season from North Allegheny Senior High School, the Tigers had a successful homecoming with a pair of wins on Tuesday night. The NA Boys defeated Cathedral Prep by a 16-8 decision and the Lady Tigers defeated Villa Maria, 9-7.
Six different players scored goals for the NA Boys as the Tigers built a 14-3 lead after three quarters and rolled the Ramblers. Senior captain David Lomakin led the charge with six goals, while sophomores Keller Sens and Sean McClellan each posted a hat trick. McClellan also tallied a team-high three steals and five assists. Adding to the offensive onslaught, senior captain Tyler Tieppo scored a pair of goals and sophomores Ben Gavran and Nico Alarcon added one goal apiece. In net, Eliot Maravich and Justin Morrison combined for 11 saves and the victory.
After two overtime contests against Villa Maria earlier this season, extra time wasn’t necessary for this one as the Lady Tigers claimed a 9-7 victory in regulation. NA held an 8-4 lead entering the fourth quarter and staved off Villa Maria’s rally attempt in the final stanza. The offense was led by senior captain Emma Halle with a four-goal performance. Sophomore Rebecca Melanson posted a hat trick and hauled in a team-best three steals. Also tallying markers for the Tigers were Marissa Dorman, Emma Donnelly and Jamie Palone. Dorman dished out a team-high three assists. Junior goalie Hannah Ziegler made 14 saves in the win.
On the season, the NA Boys sit at 5-1 overall and the Lady Tigers are 4-2 on the campaign. The North Allegheny water polo team is slated next for a contest at Cumberland Valley this weekend.
The North Allegheny water polo teams made another trip north to Erie to face off against Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria on Saturday. The NA boys topped Prep, 17-10, while the Lady Tigers were edged by Villa Maria, 14-13 in overtime.
In their third matchup of the season, the North Allegheny boys’ team once again wrangled the Ramblers. Led by a seven-goal performance by senior captain David Lomakin, the Tigers built a 9-5 lead by halftime and held the advantage the rest of the way. Sophomores Sean McClellan and Keller Sens had big games offensively with four and three goals, respectively. Sophomore Asher Jones added two goals, followed by junior Ethan Berty with one marker. Defensively, McClellan paced the Tigers with six steals. Goalies Eliot Maravich and Justin Morrison combined for six saves in the victory.
Back on Sept. 19, the Lady Tigers opened the season with a thrilling overtime win over Villa Maria, 15-14. On Saturday, however, Villa Maria returned the favor with a 14-13 victory in double overtime. Despite the loss, it was a well-played game by the Tigers, who were led by senior captain Emma Halle’s six goals. Sophomore Rebecca Melanson aided the scoring effort with four goals, while senior captain Marissa Dorman chipped in with two goals and junior Emily Donnelly added one marker. On defense, junior Anna Kegel tallied a team-high four steals. Junior goalie Hannah Ziegler made seven saves.
Following Saturday’s results, the North Allegheny boys’ team improves to 4-1 on the season, while the Lady Tigers fall to 3-2. North Allegheny will host Cathedral Prep and Villa Maria on Tuesday night.
The North Allegheny water polo teams were back in action at Erie McDowell on Tuesday night and both the NA Boys and NA Girls came away victorious.
The NA Boys earned an 11-7 win over the Trojans, led by senior captain David Lomakin with a six-goal performance. Senior captain Tyler Tieppo contributed three goals and sophomore Sean McClellan had an outstanding all-around outing with two goals, and a team-high three assists and three steals. Goalies Eliot Maravich and Justin Morrison split time in net and each posted four saves in the victory.
The Lady Tigers jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first period of their contest with McDowell and rolled to an 11-3 triumph. Sophomore Rebecca Melanson netted a team-best four goals and two assists. Senior captain Emma Halle and junior Anna Kegel tallied three goals and three steals apiece. Senior captain Marissa Dorman chipped in with a goal as well. Junior goalie Hannah Ziegler shut down the Trojans and made eight saves to earn the win.
Both the NA Boys and Girls improves to 3-1 with their wins at McDowell. The Tigers have another road trip to Erie on Saturday when they take on McDowell, Villa Maria and Cathedral Prep.
