Tigers Drop 2-1 Decision To Undefeated Rams

Posted on:

In a matchup between two playoff bound teams in Class AAA, the North Allegheny Tigers dropped a 2-1 decision to the Pine-Richland Rams on Wednesday night in Gibsonia.

Similar to their meeting on Sept. 30 at Newman Stadium, the game was again tightly contested. The North Allegheny defense hung tough, but the undefeated Rams took a 2-0 lead on second and third period goals from Boston University commit, Ella Rottinghaus.

North Allegheny rallied back in the fourth quarter and trimmed the deficit to 2-1 when senior Jordan Richards scored on a penalty corner with 7:54 remaining in the game. Unfortunately, the Tigers couldn’t not come any closer as the Rams earned the win, 2-1.

North Allegheny drops to 8-4-1 overall and 7-3-1 in Section 1-AAA. Pine-Richland concludes section play with a 12-0 mark and enters the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. The Tigers will be the No. 3 seed in the upcoming WPIAL playoffs and will take on second-seeded Peters Township on Wednesday, Oct. 28.

NA Defense Smothers Norwin For Shutout Win, 1-0

Posted on:

Sophomore Sofia Mianzo scored the game’s only goal in the third quarter to propel North Allegheny to a 1-0 win over the Norwin Knights in Section 1-AAA action. It’s the sixth straight game without a loss for North Allegheny, going 5-0-1 in that span. The shutout was the fifth in a row for sophomore goalie Jordan Ashbaugh and the North Allegheny defense.

The first half was primarily dictated by defense with few scoring chances for either team. With 6:12 to play in the first quarter, Norwin’s best opportunity came when senior forward Emma Mazur put a hard shot on net but Ashbaugh delivered a kick save to keep the game scoreless.

North Allegheny’s best chance of the half occurred with 1:30 to go in the second quarter as Mianzo feathered a pass into the circle that was deflected on net by senior Jordan Richards. However, Norwin goalie Elizabeth Long made the stop and the contest stayed scoreless at the half.

Early in the third quarter, North Allegheny came on strong with sustained pressure. The Tigers cashed in on that pressure with 10:15 to go in the third thanks to Mianzo’s goal, assisted by senior Maria Duchi, to give NA a 1-0 lead.

The Knights had few chances in the remaining minutes and were outshot by the Tigers, 5-2. North Allegheny led in the penalty corner category as well, 9-1. With the crisp passes of sophomore Lauren Kampi aiding the NA efforts on the corner and in field position, she was named the Wright Automotive Player of the Game.

With the win, playoff-bound North Allegheny improves to 8-3-1 overall and 7-2-1 in Section 1-AAA. Norwin is eliminated from playoff contention and falls to 3-7 in the section. The Tigers will wind down the regular season schedule with a good playoff tune-up against the first-place Pine-Richland Rams.

Maria Duchi’s OT Goal Lifts NA To 1-0 Win Over Fox Chapel

Posted on:

Playing in an overtime game for the second time this week, senior Maria Duchi netted the game-winning goal with just 59 seconds remaining to propel North Allegheny to a 1-0 non-section victory over Fox Chapel on Thursday night at Newman Stadium.

Despite a scoreless 60 minutes of regulation, both teams had their chances to score. In the first period, North Allegheny owned the possession and had an opportunity with 9:00 minutes on the clock but Fox Chapel goalie Mira Tramontina stopped Sofia Mianzo in the circle to keep the game tied.

Fox Chapel dictated the pace in the second quarter but was denied with 10:00 minutes to go in the half when sophomore goalie Jordan Ashbaugh made a great save on Lily Zaltman and the game remained scoreless.

The second half had a bit more ebb and flow with both teams having scoring opportunities. Zaltman charged into NA territory on a fast break with 8:00 minutes to play in the third quarter but was stonewalled by senior defenseman Sophia Caruso. With 4:00 minutes left in the third, Fox Chapel’s Alexandra Soloman created a scoring chance with a steal but missed wide right on her shot attempt.

In the fourth quarter, a shot from outside the circle by senior Ashley Loftis was deflected off a defenseman’s stick and into the Fox Chapel net for what appeared to be the game’s first goal with 12:00 left in regulation. However, the deflection occurred from outside the circle and no goal was properly ruled. Just minutes later, Lauren Kampi was awarded a penalty stroke but was turned away on a save by Tramontina.

While scoring was a struggle in regulation, the wide-open 7-on-7 play in overtime gave North Allegheny the upper hand. The Tigers team speed gave them the better of the play in the extra session and eventually that pressure paid off with Duchi’s game-winning goal with under a minute remaining.

With the non-section win, North Allegheny leaps to 6-3-1 overall, while Fox Chapel dips to 5-3. The Tigers return to Section 1-AAA action on Wednesday with a home game against Hempfield.
